Two queens majestic and powerful
Bound by fate divine
Though they had never met
And would never meet in this corporeal realm
Their journeys intertwined
With the destinies of their kingdom
Where one would unbind her hair in victory and freedom
And the other in grief and lamentation
As oneโs husband cut down the otherโs,
Slaves as they were to their own purpose.
While one would praise the Goddess of Fate
For returning her husband safely
The other would rebuke it, calling it the devilโs whore
For taking away her husband and her home.
As one queen prepared a celebration
The other contemplated her bleak future
Disconnected and yet connected though they may be
In the simple act of unbounding their hair they were one
For didnโt the victor also mourn the price that war extracts
And didnโt the vanquished have a glimmer of hope,
As they picked up the pieces?
Two queens majestic and powerful
Unbound now by the forces divine
As they continue on their now diverging paths
Looking for a mate with whom they could commiserate
Not knowing the other had been within grasp
If not for the games played by the gods?
And while tales would be preserved
Songs written, plays performed
That would bring the battlefield alive
No songs would remember
Those unbound hair
Grateful prayers that they had been given a new lease
And yet secret tears shed for the other
For the tales only remember the outcome
But not what passed before or after.
