Guns and roses

Red dress
Slit up my thigh
A gun in hand
I enter the party.

Red lipstick
Adorning my lips
A flying kiss to the girl on the left
As the guard raises his gun.

Bang bang
The guard is down
A scream rents the air
As the party goers rush towards the exit.

Bang bang
The doors screech shut
The crowd comes to a halt
I stand there, all red, gun pointing.

Shrieks, shouts,
Questions, cries
Nothing moves me
As eyes roam the crowd.

I see you then
In your black tux
Red tie
As a smile splits my face.

Our eyes lock
The crowd parts
I beckon you
As a door behind me opens.

You look at the door,
Then at me,
Indecision marring your beautiful face
But I stay put.

I had made my move
Now it was your turn
This had to be your decision
Even as my heart hurtled in my chest.

Another guard tries to intervene
I knock him unconscious
Not wanting to use my gun
As I drop a red rose on his chest.

You move then
Crossing the divide
In your clipped walk
And fancy perfume.

You pick up the rose
And put it in your lapel
Taking my hand you say,
What are you doing?

I point the gun to your chest
The crowd gasps
But I bring my mouth to your ear and say,
Giving you your freedom.

You step back
Stunned, incredulous
Till a grin lights-up your handsome features
And you pull me in for a kiss.

The gun stays between us
As does the rose
You turn around
Looking at what you were giving up one last time.

You turn to me
And as we make a move
The spell we had cast on the crowd
Breaks and the shrieks restart.

We reach the edge
You stop once more
Turn around
And wave a farewell.

Will you regret it?
What, for rescuing me from them?
I shrugged
They were his family after all.

It could have been less dramatic,
He says with a smile
As I punch his arm
And we start moving again.

Thank you, he says,
For being my knight
For you my darling, I say,
Always.

What a high drama that was! The setting, the characters, and the events, all stand out distinctly, as if it’s happening right now, right here, in front of me. Amazing storytelling through a verse Suchita.

Wow, what a bold imagery! How bold is the lover. Just from the beginning to the ending, the movie glimpsed in front of my eyes. And I found my thoughts back when she said, Always. How bold! Absolutely loved it. Goosebumps.

Very beautiful poem. I could imagine the scenes playing through my mind while I was reading. Loved the title too!

    1. I think in this instance the title inspired the poem. I liked it so much I had to force my brain to come up with something appropriate. Thanks Jyoti!

    1. Haha yes it does have a Mr. and Mrs. Smith vibe though I was going more for Nancy Sinatra’s Bang Bang.

  8. Splendid! What imagery and what a somersault. It could have been less dramatic but then let us remember it was drama that gave Shakespeare his due. I prefer the drama. Well done!

  9. The rescue was quite dramatic. But is she now a fugitive? Will thatnend well for their love?

  10. Ha! I love all the dramatics and big rescues and going out all-guns-blazing when it comes to poetry, but in real life, I wish they really cut out the drama.

    1. Oh absolutely! It’s one of the reasons I quickly discarded the dream of becoming an actor to play multiple roles and decided to become the orchestrator (writer) instead.
