If there is a genre that I adore after Fantasy it is Crime Thrillers. I love detective novels, I love mysteries and I absolutely love conspiracies, spies and fast paced thrillers. I have always wanted to write a similarly fast paced story but I always got caught up in the details: how does law and order work, what happens when someone is murdered, how does a police interrogation work…the amount of research into making a plausible story was so daunting that I would give up even before beginning.
I soon thought that a private eye would make at least the law and order part easier but still nothing really clicked. Except the desire to write one. And then Radha came strolling into my life and the rest…well let’s just say the rest was a pleasant surprise.
The story began innocently but ended on a note I couldn’t have predicted. The story began on a fun, light note but where it ended shocked me too. I suppose those two-three years of being a middle and high school teacher and listening to my students’ stories paid off in ways I couldn’t have imagined.
There were times when I was running behind – last year had been easier – and at one point I almost stopped. But Radha was patiently waiting for me and I couldn’t bear to disappoint him or myself.
And now I have a thriller on my hand without even thinking about it! The writing muse works in mysterious ways. I feel I am in need of communicating my gratitude but I am not sure to who so I’ll just say it to my character: thank you Radha for showing up. You have now taught me a new skill – that of writing a different genre. For that I will always be grateful.
