Today’s prompt was hard to choose – not because they weren’t good but because I couldn’t get my brain to conjure a story around any. I tried to write an interpretation for the quote but it felt rather inconsequential.
While trying to think of a theme for a work related post, Harry Potter came into the picture (because let’s be honest, every conversation where it comes into the picture is a good conversation) and I told them that I grew up with Harry Potter – when HP6 came out I was 16. One of our schoolmates had stood in line and bought a book and then brought it to school! Oh the ruckus that created – like getting to touch that book hours after its release would anoint us somehow with magic and…sigh those were good days.
Speaking of Harry Potter, I inadvertently started to think of bravery and the quote for today’s prompt, “Our fate lives within us. You only have to be brave enough to see it” – Brave, kept circulating in my head. I was 18 when the dream to be a writer began. But it wasn’t until I turned 25 that I started to do something about it. I had thought writing would be tough and it wasn’t something I’d be able to do. Turns out, as soon as I decided to not let fear and convention dictate me, as soon as I decided to take that step, the process simply began. Looking back, it is safe to say, the day I decided to get out of my own way I was able to do something about the dream.
It is easy to forget that we are the masters of our destiny. Taking the easy route is a no brainer. I have been guilty of doing that many, many times. It is easy to put the responsibility on circumstances, the world, the universe, your neighbour’s dog but not on yourself. I think that’s why I liked the quote so much because when I understood that the only thing I needed was bravery, it was smooth sailing – well almost but then the sea has a tendency to be rough, violent and serene – much like life, no?
As for the rules part of the post? Here are some of my parents’ “rules”:
- Don’t do anything we wouldn’t
- Buy what brings a smile on your face
- Eat good food (from dad) and laugh out loud (from mom)
And yes rule number 3 would definitely become a problem thanks to a cheeseburger.
Written for the Write Tribe Festival of Words – June 2018 prompt: “Our fate lives within us. You only have to be brave enough to see it.” – Brave
