A zebra’s stripes

The world was young, fresh and full of untold adventures. God was still sending down birds, beasts, trees and anything he could think of as His two favourite sons frolicked in the new Eden.

It was but seven days since the beginning of time when a curious looking four-legged creature walked onto the scene, braying like it had something awful stuck in its throat. God’s two favourite sons were delighted at the sound he made and took turns to get the creature to bray on command.

As time passed, more and more curious life forms started to occupy Eden but all of them were colourless, much to the delight of the older one, and consternation of the younger one.

Soon the younger one started to complain about the sameness of Eden and started to crave excitement. He hadn’t left heaven for this, he often told his big brother who only said that it was all a part of God’s plan and they should simply wait for things to unfold.

While the younger one loved his big brother, he couldn’t deny he wanted some spice in his life and so decided, what better way than to alter God’s plan? He gave the curious, braying, colourless creature a colour – a hitherto unknown concept – that of black.

This one act of mutiny swept Eden and all the perfection leached out of the world as it was filled with anarchy. The older one begged his brother to take back what he had done but he refused. He was finally having fun, he said, Dad’s plan be damned.

Shocked at this blasphemy, the older one was forced to take matters into his hands as he struggled to reverse what his foolish brother had done.

He made several attempts to return Eden to its previous perfection, but all that he managed to accomplish was a fifty percent dilution. That is, the previously colourless, recently black, braying creature looked decidedly black and white! And though many fights were fought between the brothers, on who was responsible for restoring balance to Eden:

For clearly it is I who is responsible little brother
How can that be when it was my blasphemy that lead us down this path

What neither of them realized: it indeed had been God’s plan after all.
