Between your pages

Your silky caress on my fingers
Your ability to contain my sorrow
And your skill at eliciting shrieks of laughter
Surely you must be an enchantress
For keeping me in your thrall
Day after day
Long night after long night
Bringing me to the edge of my seat
Lulling me into a sense of peace.

A friend, a lover
The enemy, the teacher
Between your pages
I have found so many versions of myself
That I forget where you end
And where I begin.

You have caused fights my love,
You have made my friendships
And given me a yardstick to judge
But you know what you have never done?
Punish me, or hurt me or left me
Between your pages
I have found love so divine
A spirit so undaunted
As to leave me breathless and moved.

You came to me when I was in need
Stayed away when I had no use for you
Welcomed me with open arms
When I came running back to you
And yet you havenโ€™t extracted a pound of flesh!
Sorcery I say this is!

How can you be so forgivingโ€ฆ
โ€ฆafford to be so loving?
How can you not have any wantsโ€ฆ
โ€ฆor demand something of me?
You must tell me my love
What I must do to repay you
But do be gentle
For the debt I owe is incomparable
To the joy you have bestowed.

Between your pages is where
Theyโ€™ll find me when I die
Caressing your silkiness
Moaning, โ€˜just one more.โ€™
Darkness then may claim me
But youโ€™ll be the one welcoming me.

Your poem is indeed a great ode to out of the ordinary love between soulmates. The love your poem refers to comes out of a connection of souls and not rational minds. Lucky are the people who find such love.

    1. Whether soul connection, or a meeting of rational minds, love is ephemeral. Thanks Jai.

  12. Sometimes we do wonder how some people are so nice and if we’ve added half the value they’ve added to us. I feel you Suchita. And sometimes we need to let them go. And that’s the worst. Because you know for a fact that you’re letting go of one amazing human being. Beautifully penned and relatable.
