The chasm

There is a line between you and I
One which we do not cross
And now, neither of us can cross
Because it is filled with too much
Anger and bitterness.

There was a time when you and I
Were best friends, talking, laughing,
Where we didn’t need words to explain
What the other was feeling or
What needed to be said to uplift.

But now the line has turned into
A chasm of all things unsaid
Of lies, hatred, distance
Even though I try to breach it
As you try to mend it.

The love is lost somewhere
Even if invisible forces
Keep us tethered to one another
Stretching over that ever-widening chasm
Making me yearn for when we were close.

When did you decide you couldn’t
Share your grief with me?
When did I decide I liked you less
And less as time went on?
When did we draw that line?

I see you struggle to come over
I see me try to forgive
I see you retreat at the smallest loss
I see me amplify the smallest victory
When did we stop understanding each other?

You were the wind beneath my wings
I was the solid rock you could lean on
Now your wind buffets me everywhere
And I have become a burden on your back
How did good go so very, very wrong?

Would we be able to cross this line
I wonder, if it’ll happen today or
Tomorrow. What would we find when
We cross that chasm between
Will we find each other? Or a stranger?

  3. “Chasm” is on my list of words everyone should learn and use. It talks of the rift, the widening schism where gradually two people lead to a point of no return. I could connect with the emotion you wanted to exude whilst writing this post. Another great one!

I am still under the spell of it Suchita, that I am not able to come up with words to express what I feel.

  6. Wow. Your words resonate deeply. We sometimes fail to notice the transition from support to burden in a relationship. We fail to notice when the line is drawn. Beautiful.

Suchita, I could relate with each and every words. As if, you were telling me my own story. Every word, every emotion, resonated with me. Even I could read between lines, what was left unsaid. I have saved this poem, will read it again and again. Beautiful indeed. Just like, we engrave our names on wood, and we forget the place, but the name remains there forever.

  8. Loved it Suchitra. The Chasm…I never thought it that way. And I loved the end…Be sure you will find a stranger if you cross the chasm…A stranger who will be back to their usual self too soon!

It has layers of meaning: normal love to spiritual one. Where’s it coming from? It’s said that great poems come from a broken heart. From now on, your smile will remind me of Kaifi Azmi’s Tum itna jo… :p

It’s very flattering that you can see meaning in this poem way beyond what I have put into it. Thanks Ravish.
