Foolish

Everyone thought that we were foolish
That things would never work out
They even went as far as to say
We were too young to know
All the heartbreak our union would cause.

But we knew better, didn’t we love?
We knew it was them who were foolish
And us who were brave,
Brave enough to bear the consequences
Of loving someone not allowed.

You told me we were worth fighting
That our cause was just and good
And even though I faltered
I lost faith sometimes,
You stood firm and gentle.

In your booming voice you said,
Move and make way,
Wrapped with compassion you said,
Yes, we are different but we are still the same,
The only thing you need fear, is ignorance.

Have I told you I am proud of you?
You have made a convert of me as well
Restored my faith in us
With your strength and words
Announcing without rancour that this is our right.

Let them call us foolish
Let them say we don’t belong
You and I know better
And we will teach them
That our love is valid too.

Love gives strength unknown to us… Courage may seem foolish to some… But what is life without risk

    1. Absolutely. Without risk, life is meaningless.

True love can tide over all the obstacles in its path. May their love be one such. Love and faith sure will help them confirm their conviction that others were wrong.

  4. Nicely penned. The feeling of being different but quite in love and the world opposing the pair. The only common point being Love. Wow.

  6. A love still that will stand the test of time and many other obstacles. As long as two people truly trust and believe in each other, anything is possible. Beautifully penned. 🙂

    1. One could even say ‘being foolish’ is only a matter of perspective. Thanks Durga Prasad.

  9. When in love, we have all the strength to take over the world. Who cares if we’re labelled as foolish. And yet love can be so blind, that we might actually be foolish. Brilliantly written.

  10. Interestingly lovers are always considered foolish. Years later they land up thinking that some other lovers are foolish. I like the picture of a ‘fool’ in foolish.

    1. Haha the only reason I chose the picture was it was pretty. Nothing so smart as ‘fool’ in foolish 😛

    1. Don’t know about Buddha – he did leave his family behind. More like ‘crazy in love.’

      1. Well, craziness is the prime requirement of love. In the story of Laila-Majnu, I used to believe that Majnu was the name of Laila’s lover; later, got to know that his real name was Qays. He was called Majnu because of his ‘crazy in love’ feeling.

Same goes with Bauls of Bengal. The beauty of the word ‘Baul’ is that etymologically it could mean both mad as well as enlightened. A normal eye could not differentiate between a mad & an enlightened, like it could not differentiate between infrared & ultraviolet. One is below the normal while other is beyond.

Some believe that people started to call Siddhartha as Buddhu because he abandoned his luxuries and it got modified into Buddha.

And, Buddha didn’t leave his family behind. In fact, he helped his family in attaining enlightenment. When he returned, both his wife & son joined him.

The point is your poem could be understood on the spiritual level, like the Sufi story of Laila-Majnu.

        Stay blessed! 🙂
