Everyone thought that we were foolish
That things would never work out
They even went as far as to say
We were too young to know
All the heartbreak our union would cause.
But we knew better, didn’t we love?
We knew it was them who were foolish
And us who were brave,
Brave enough to bear the consequences
Of loving someone not allowed.
You told me we were worth fighting
That our cause was just and good
And even though I faltered
I lost faith sometimes,
You stood firm and gentle.
In your booming voice you said,
Move and make way,
Wrapped with compassion you said,
Yes, we are different but we are still the same,
The only thing you need fear, is ignorance.
Have I told you I am proud of you?
You have made a convert of me as well
Restored my faith in us
With your strength and words
Announcing without rancour that this is our right.
Let them call us foolish
Let them say we don’t belong
You and I know better
And we will teach them
That our love is valid too.
