Hugs and kisses
An alien concept for me
Until I made the mistake of
Telling you this and you
Took it upon yourself
To teach me how to give
And accept a hug and a kiss.
It didn’t help
I was still shit at it
But you hugged me nevertheless
Giving and taking affection
Like it was a normal thing.
First I didn’t know what to do
With my hands and face
When you snapped at me
Told me to stop thinking
And just accept what was given.
It became easier.
I became proficient.
Not just at receiving but also at giving.
The comfort of a tight hug
The warmth of a kiss
Thawed me a little
Not enough to do it
Well or as freely as you
But better everyday.
Then one day you didn’t
Offer me a hug.
Confused and hurt
I stood there like a rock
Shifting on my feet
Wondering what I had done wrong.
But you had taught me well
So this time I initiated
The hug and the peck
Surprising even you.
Closing your gaping mouth
I mimicked what you had taught me
Taking your hands
And placing them around me
To complete the hug.
You were dazed,
I smug at the affect
I had on you.
I realized that day
The beauty of what
You had taught me
Simply because I had the
courage to ask
And you had the compassion
To give.
