These are a few of my favourite songs

I have never been a music person. I enjoy listening to songs but I cannot have them in the background while I do other work because then Iโ€™m not listening to the lyrics and that I feel is the height of disrespect to an artist. Just listening makes me restless so I can sometimes go days without music.

If my former college roommate is to be believed, my song choices are old people’s choices. She was aghast when I told her one of the songs I was listening to was from โ€˜83! The only reason I discover new music [and by that I in no way mean songs released in 2022 but new to me which end up being at least 7-8 years old] is thanks to YouTubeโ€™s algorithm or a song I heard and liked in a movie or show.

One of my most prized possessions, back in the day, was a Sony Walkman – a bright white model that I used so much it finally broke on me. I had got the iPod as well as a gift but it didnโ€™t have the same weight as a walkman did. I had a few cassettes: Enrique, JLO, Backstreet Boys and those โ€˜Best ofโ€™ cassettes they released every year. Thatโ€™s how I discovered different artists, reading the lyrics in the cassette covers so I could sing along.

I was going through my song list in preparation of writing this post and trying to trace back the history of how I came across a particular song – or why after so many years it’s still a part of my most heard music. It was quite interesting to see that a few of them were gifts – shared by people because they loved it and wanted to share that love.

Like the Simon & Garfunkel song Sound of Silence. Thatโ€™s a gift from dad. One of his favourite singers, I was fascinated by the name Garfunkel when I was little. Over the years, my relationship with the song has evolved like my understanding of the lyrics have evolved.

Mom used to love singing Do-Re-Mi to me when I was about 3 or 4 years old. She even taught the song to me because she loved it that much and I refused to learn the alphabet since it was boring. I knew the song even before I saw Sound of Music.

Carnival of Rust was a gift from my friends. Poets of the Fall were doing an impromptu tour of India at the Hard Rock Cafe if Iโ€™m remembering correctly. And everyone was listening to this song on repeat. After that I discovered many songs from them. But Carnival of Rust hits differently – maybe because it is a shared song.

The entire genre of classic rock was introduced by a friend Shashwat. It feels weird to type his full name because for us, he is Shasha. I was in school and I listened to only pop then and he took it upon himself to educate me on real music. He introduced me to many, many names but my favourite will remain Nothing Else Matters. Every time I hear the guitar solo at the 5 minute mark, I think of him. It was he who directed my attention to the importance of guitar solos and drum beats in rock music.

And finally, hereโ€™s a song – as a gift from me to you. Two Men in Love by the Irrepressibles. I absolutely adore the lyrics of the song and how it changes its pace and pitch.

Do you have a song in your list that was a gift from someone? Iโ€™d love to hear the story!

  1. Oh the mention of MP3, iPod, cassettes, and CDs. You made me nostalgic.
I don’t know about gifted, but my father had a habit of getting our family favorites together on mixtape before any road trip and the album of Gupt (a Bollywood movie) was on the top for all four of us.

  2. A lovely list of songs, Suchita. But on a very different note, I just realized that I have never had anyone gift me a song so far!

    1. Oh we can’t have that. Here’s a gift from me to you: https://youtu.be/XgdY_s1LsZc

My cousin used to *love* this song and when the movie came out, it used to play on a loop on all the radio channels. We’d switch one to the next channel and we’d end up catching the song again. We made ourselves sick listening to it ๐Ÿ˜ƒ

May I add to this list. Another favorite of mine was — Yesterday once more by Carpenters . This was a permanent play by the then Vividh Bharti during 1978-79 . I used to wait for this song to be played on my little transistor between 8- 8.30 pm and boy I used to sing along . Still cherish those memories.

My song choices are in fits and bursts. Sometimes I catch up on the latest English numbers and listen to them on loop. Then I slide back to my old 80’s and 90’s favourites, most of which were introduced to me by my bro. I can listen to Dire Straits, Pink Floyd, UB40 … even now! I haven’t listened to a couple that you mention. I shall now! ๐Ÿ™‚

    1. Pink Floyd is another of dad’s favs. He loves Brick in the Wall and when I was little had told me how it was in 3 parts and I wasn’t listening to it right because I would listen only to part 3 and not 1&2 ๐Ÿ˜€ He was so proud of me when he caught me listening to Shine on You Crazy Diamond!

A very distinctive list you have Suchita. Do re mi is one of my favourites too.
These days my songs list is thrust upon me by my oh-so-teenage-girl who is a kinda rebel of sorts (against what? I am clueless!) and so is her choice of songs. I better not dare rebel against her choice else it will lead to full blownup hot and cold war mix!

  7. Thatโ€™s a fabulous list you just shared and will listen to them now. One of my favourites is Wonderful Tonight by Eric Clapton and as you said it is because of the story behind it and not just because of great music. Not revealing much but my boyfriend played that on guitar for me and later I fell in love with the song too!

    1. Oh wow how wonderful! The first and only song I learnt on the guitar was Hero by Enrique because at the time I felt it was the epitome of romance songs ๐Ÿ˜€

Starry Starry Nights, Love You More Than I Can Say, Singing in the Rain and so many more. Carpenters, ABBA, Sky Full Of Stars (Coldplay). So many lovely songs out there… enjoyed your post, Suchita!

    1. There was a point where I used to use que sera sera as a motto to get me through the day. Carpenters and Abba have heard quite a bit thanks to the parents. So glad you enjoyed it Deepti ๐Ÿ˜€

  10. Ah, I am a Hindi music person. So, I have no idea about these songs.

‘…then Iโ€™m not listening to the lyrics and that I feel is the height of disrespect to an artist.’

Very thoughtful!. I agree. I can’t write with any music in the background. So I take a short break and listen to my favourite song.

  11. Simon and Garfunkel, yes! It’s uncanny that ‘If I could’ is my FAVOURITE, in capitals! But I love some music from today as well. My children have introduced me to some lovely songs, most of which I’ve heard on road trips with them.

  14. Love Simon and Garfunkel!! I loved the way how each of your favourite songs has a special person associated with it. That is music, right? It is not only about the composition and lyrics but also how it makes you feel. I have many favourites. I love music and actually listen to it quite a lot while doing chores! New artists like the Weeknd and Imagine Dragons are my current fav, though I think all time fav would be The Beatles (does that make me very old??)

    1. Oh definitely. My song choices change as per my mood. I love Radioactive and Demons by Imagine Dragons ๐Ÿ™‚ We used to sing Help! by The Beatles in school so what’s old?
