Icecream

One of my favourite memories from when I was 4-5 years old. I have wanted to talk about it since forever so it’s unsurprising that it came out as a poem. What was surprising was it came out in Hindi. If you don’t want to read, I have recited the poem too. You can scroll down to find the SoundCloud embed.

School ka akhri din
Prarambh hongi kal se garmi ki chuttiya
Aur homework bhi – pata nahin kyun dete hai homework
Shayad teachers khud bahut kaam karti hongi
Chuttiyo mein ki nahin chahti
Hum bache hasse khele mauj manaye.

School ka akhri din
Bell baji aur class se sab bhaage
Idhar-udhar jaise hume yakeen nahin
Ki wakaye mein chuttiya shuru, school bandh
Aur azadi humare kadmo mein.

School ka akhri din
Mein pahuchi apne auto ke paas
Wahi auto wale bhaiya jo har subah
Ghar se school aur school se ghar
Le jaate hai, khyaal rakhte hai
Majedar kahaniya bhi sunate hai
Aur kabhi kabhi humari kahaniya bhi sun lete hai.

School ka akhri din
Khatam nahin tab tak
Jab tak auto wale bhaiya
Hume humari chuttiyo ka pehla taufa
Na de de. Jo hai…
Icecream!

School ka akhri din
Humara auto pahucha Amul icecream ki dukaan par
Bahut auto hai uss maidan mein
Par humara best hai kyunki humare bhaiya
Laaye hai humare liye vanilla icecream,
Ek hassi aur ek dua
Humari chuttiya ho behet manoranjak.

School ka akhri din
Abhi bhi yaad ata hai
Aur agar bahut yaad sataye toh le aati hoon mein
Ek vanilla cup, or woh yaadein
Jab mein thi choti si
Aur duniya ki saari pareshaniya
Seemit thi homework aur school tak.

It has a childlike innocent quality. Made me nostalgic about my school days.

    I scream you scream….Icecream!!!
You made the ice cream all the more ‘thanda thanda cool cool’ and mouth melting with your poem Suchita!
I also liked the phrase ‘azadi kadamo me’… you caught the feeling bang on.
Wishing you a very happy summer with lots of ice cream and loads of fun-filled nostalgia.

  5. Oh my God, same pinch. Our autowale uncle, his name was ‘Mahesh bhai’ also used to treat us at this ice cream place called ‘Downtown’ at my hometown at Ahmedabad on last day of our exam before summer vacation. Since my mom was the Principal of the pre-primary section of the school I studied at, she even invited all the school auto drivers to my wedding, that’s the last I met him, it has been 17 years. Your poetry reminded me of him, next time I visit Ahmedabad , I am going to find out where he is and meet him.

  6. So true. I keep telling my children when they feel burdened by hw and studies that it’s so wonderful that all your troubles are limited to studies.
