Night

It is night.
The utensils are clean, and the kitchen has been put to right.
The phone is silent
Even the city beyond her windows is silent…
There is no sound of drill, or horns, or the bustle of people going here, going there.
The only sound in the room is the soft whirring of the AC and the distant strains of club music.
The night…has just started for her.

The bra comes off, the hair comes undone and the bedroom door closes with a sharp click
The lights are dimmed, she has special lights just for such nights.
Music becomes louder and in the confined space of her bedroom, with just the moon as witness, she dances.

The dancing lasts an hour and sweaty and panting, she collapses onto the bed, looking at the closed door and the silent phone with some trepidation.
The door remains closed. The phone…silent.
Suddenly, she has time and things to do this night!

She decides on writing first as she spies her laptop. But before she begins, she closes her work-related tabs with some glee.
It feels like a naughty thing to do, like she’s playing truant and any moment a teacher will come to her desk and scold her.
Once she’s unplugged, she begins a poem.

She hasn’t written in so long that for a moment, words fail her.
So she starts writing about her day, adding in some magical abilities so at least on paper, she can avoid work she does not want to do. Like calling that man to follow up on a payment.
No, in her magical world, payments are released as soon as the work is done.

The night, she writes, is a wondrous time where reality recedes, just a little, and anything is possible. Even magic.

  2. As I read today itself..sometimes you need that solitude to redeem yourself. I’d say, even reclaim. I enjoyed this SuchitaπŸ’

I can completely relate to this. I find the night to be an extremely productive time when I can get maximum done. There is a running joke in my home that my internal clock is messed up—it shows night as day. But I like it that way. I find I can be most mindful when the world is asleep. 😁

While dance makes one forget past and future, reading transports you to the land far off. Reading is like wandering in the unknown holding the hand of the writer, a guided tour sort of. Writing, the pinnacle of all three, is wandering in the magical land of mind’s desire, restraint free. Freedom is a precious intangible feeling!
