I have a younger sibling. Which means no matter what I do, or where I am in life, I will always have this one person who will smother me with her love one moment, accuse me of cramping her style in the next moment and cry tears of anguish the third moment because Iโm not giving her enough attention.

She has special magic, my sister. She has us wrapped around her long fingers and we find ourselves running to please her. Sheโs like our queen.
So today Iโm going to introduce you to her personal brand in the form of five gems she has bestowed on me, even though I never asked for them.
How to say no to paid work
My sister is the person who will cry because she doesnโt have money and will say no to paid work because it is inconveniencing her nothing time. I constantly oscillate between wanting to murder her for taking her career so nonchalantly and being in awe of her ability to stick to her guns and saying no so easily and without guilt. Since Iโm the older sibling in whose dictionary the word no doesnโt exist, the awe is usually stronger than murderous thoughts.
Healthy narcissism
Sheโs the only one I have seen patting herself on her back for a job well done. And if I dare to say, โYou know maybe this isnโt as good as you think it isโ she will shut it down with, โYou donโt know anything. I am awesome.โ
I wonder what kind of healthy self-esteem it takes to reach this stage and where can I buy some.
No fucks given
The number of fucks my sister gives for things she has decided we are done discussing are exactly zero. Sheโs like a cow standing in the middle of a busy road, munching grass and silently telling the crowd, โYou figure it out. Iโm not moving.โ
Living the good life
Apart from the many, many things I have inherited from my middle-class parents, one major pain in the ass has been the guilt I feel for spending money on myself. One cannot always answer the question โdo you really need thisโ in the affirmative. I mean do I really need this lip balm when I have two perfectly good ones or am I buying it because itโs pretty? Who knows?
Well, my sister knows.
She needs everything, preferably as soon as the need has presented itself. At last count, she had about ten lip balms in her bedside drawer.
Wearing your heart on your sleeves
My sister does not understand the subtle art of not letting everyone in a 10 feet radius know, exactly, what she thinks of something or someone. She will mimic, laugh, scrunch her face in disgust or delight and give me a look that makes everyone turn to me and ask, โWhat does she mean?โ
Ugh. Then I have to be the mediator and say something banal like, โOh nothing. She just really liked <insert appropriate response>.โ
As you may have gathered, my sister is a constant source of my amusement and nothing warms my blood more than teasing her.
Have you learnt any unusual lessons from the people around you?
