I’m not in the habit of making lemonade when life gives me lemons. Because my first reaction to an adversity is plain denial with the fervent hope that if I don’t see it, it won’t see me. The time period between me realizing that the problem is real may have reduced with age, but my first reaction remains the same.
My second reaction though, that’s what legends could be made of. No, this isn’t going to be about how I problem solve, unless I’m adding to the problem of course. This post is going to be more fluffy. It’s going to be about 12 things that help me feel better.
1. A well-brewed cup of earl grey tea
I love my doodh, cheeni, ubli hui chai but there is something grounding about taking the time to brew yourself a cuppa.
2. Window shopping on Kindle
I love going through the KU collections and randomly looking up books that I could potentially be reading.
3. Journaling
A black pen, an unruled sheet of paper and dim lights.
4. Scented candles
I have one called ‘Comfort’ by Bath & Body Works which when I light feels like the warmest of hugs.
5. Dancing
I usually close my eyes, play some music and pretend I’m in a club, dancing like no one is watching.
6. Art videos
To be able to witness someone creating jewellery or something beautiful using plain ingredients is like a holiday for me.
7. Desserts
In any shape or form. Chocolate is always preferred.
8. Listening to “Far Over the Misty Mountains Cold”
This is an 8-minute song that never fails to put me in the right mood. It’s from The Hobbit movies.
9. Pampering myself
Wearing a lipstick, or massaging cream on my feet or even taking the time to groom myself can feel transcendental.
10. Reading
Well of course reading a book is an instant pick-me-up, duh. I don’t just do window shopping for books, I also read them.
11. Fanfiction
Reading fanfiction – about the characters you adore just in different settings – is like therapy. Sometimes reading a 10k word fanfiction is easier than starting a book. For a new book, you need the right mindset. For a fanfic, you just need to roll into a ball and begin reading.
12. Exercise
As much as I like to moan and groan every time I have to exercise, I love doing them, or going for walks.
