My gratitude list for 2023

I love year end rituals and forcing my brain to go back to the beginning of the year to pick up some things that I did right and some things I could work on in the next year. Seeing how hard it is to recall what happened in Jan 2023, I got a brainwave that just like I maintain an excel sheet for books read, maybe I should maintain one for the year that was.

But let future Suchita worry about these things. It’s time for now Suchita’s gratitude list.

#1: I travelled a lot this year. I mean it was so much that I have run out of casual leaves. What an immensely satisfying problem to have, no?

#2: I learnt that I’m not a broken toy to be fixed. I learnt to put into words what I was feeling. Just labelling them helped me work with them.

I'm not a mess but a deeply feeling person. I'm paying attention.
I’m not a mess but a deeply feeling person. I’m paying attention.

#3: I have been learning to lean on people, asking for help when I need and becoming okay with saying, I don’t know everything.

#4: My short story got published in the Blogchatter Book of Thrillers. It has been a double win for me, first as a team member and second as a writer. The response has been phenomenal and the feedback is something we’re looking forward to incorporating in 2024.

My short story, Hartoli's Duty, got published in the Blogchatter Book of Thrillers.
Hartoli’s Duty forms a part of this anthology. Click here to read some awesome reviews.

#5: Writing really kicked my butt and I have been forced to be okay with it. It’s not like I did not write at all (this is my 50th blog post of 2023 and I have written a 1 lakh word novel too) but it forced me to acknowledge the fear that if I’m not a writer, who am I?

#6: I read some amazingly cool books this year and I made full use of my Kindle Unlimited subscription. Not to forget reading the JCB Longlist broke something in me and I’m currently reading (and enjoying) Prophet Song by Paul Lynch that won the Booker Prize this year. Never thought I’d read something from the Booker List but what can you do!

#7: Started the habit of journalling to make sense of myself as I underwent the journey of unbecoming who I thought I was. As someone who even overthinks the choosing of a nail polish colour, journalling has been a great tool in cutting the mind chatter and not allowing the spiralling thoughts to take me away from something I wish to do.

#8: Professionally speaking, I got to be a part of Happinetz’s journey. Right from having a front row seat to the ins-and-outs of what it takes to design and launch a tech product to the marketing of it, listening to stories and seeing it featured in some of the best news publications in the country, it was a reminder to have patience with your dreams. You will get where you have to reach.

#9: Meeting Blogchatter’s community members, first during the birthday meet-up and then at the offline retreat in Varanasi, was an experience I cannot wait to repeat. Knowing this community and platform mean so much to so many people, that I get to be a part of it everyday is probably a permanent highlight of my life.

Just a glimpse of all the fun we had at the offline meetups with Blogchatter community.

#10: Thank you to my family and friends for holding space for me. Applauding myself for showing up, for starting to allow myself to make mistakes, to failing and yet pushing forward. Thank you Suchita for keeping the love, kindness and grace alive.

Here’s to a fun and adventurous 2024. Love, hugs and cheers!

I love the present Suchita’s gratitude list. I started journaling when I was very young. Maybe the mind chatter got eliminated then because I don’t think too much while applying nail polish. Hahaha! Seriously, but I’m glad it has helped you cut the mind chatter and do things you want to do!! All the best!!

  15. Dear Suchita

You are an absolute inspirational person as what I believe you are from your eventful 2023. Maintaining an excel is like being disciplined in life and I just live you for that as in thus aspect I m just like you.

You are a wonderful writer and I have no doubt in that. I too wrote around 1.12 lac words last year and it was combination of my blog posts, short story writing, content writing work and few other assignments.

In regards to leaning on others… I don’t do it much as I had bad experience. I am ready to help but on the other hand I got ditched several times from other end. No hard feelings it actually made me strong and believe in my abilities alone without banking less on others.

Mine 2023 was also very eventful, meaningful and notable. I wish your gratitude list be even more lengthier than this for 2024.

    God bless you Suchita.

    Much love ❤

  16. Is it weird that I’m already curious about the other Suchita Excel sheet? Do a half yearly reveal of that one if you can 🙈 it might motivate me to continue doing it, or inspire me to start one of my own if I haven’t by then 😆
Learning to lean on people is difficult for me as well, but with baby steps I’ve learned to assign tasks or let other people take care of some things (the anxiety is always there though, will they do it the way I do? what if they mess up? Ugh!)
That question. “If I’m not a writer, who am I?” haunts me everyday and is also my answer when someone asks me why I chose to be a writer. My immediate and honest response is always, “Mujhse aur kuch hota nahi hai” 🤓😎
Congratulations on a great 2023 and wishing you a better, happier 2024, Suchita!
I’m looking forward to some amazing posts from you 🤩🙌🏻

    1. Ah delegation, my old nemesis. I have learnt, through trial by fire, to let that “will they do it right” go. I am this close to opening an Excel, honestly, and now your idea of doing a 6-month reveal is making my thought processes fire up. Thank you Manali ❤

  18. Wow Suchita, the phrases I took notice here are running out of casual leaves, 50th blog post of 2023, 1 lakh word novel, it’s not that you don’t write, good use of Kindle unlimited, thankful to friends and family and to feel ok to ask for help because you can’t be knowing everything.

This looks like a full circle of emotions packed into a 12 months bundle. Well, every year is a learning process and we writers love to recall it at the end of the year.

Let’s make an Excel to keep things simple.

    1. Hahaha I may just end up making an Excel. And that is a lot to be packed into 1 year. Thank you for that perspective.

  19. 1 lakh word novel! I look forward to reading that one for sure. I have been planning since childhood, and the plan goes on, never getting down to it. I love travelling and taking photographs, so that would be on my list this year…I hope you went to many new places, I love exploring.
Also, your story in the Book of Thrillers was certainly very creative. More power to words and travel in 2024 as well.

  25. Dear Suchita, I always take home some great pieces of wisdom from your write-ups. From this post, I bookmarked two thoughts: acknowledge the fear that if I’m not a writer, who am I and the thought of unbecoming. Both of them are precious for me. Though I believe the writer soul of mine is a part of my being, because writing is my Ikigai. And unbecoming, yes, I think after reaching to a point of life, we do need to allow ourselves for unbecoming so we can unlearn and give time to paise, breathe and reflect. Thanks for participating in the blog hop and joining the celebration. Your glorious presence makes the blog hop more enchanting and graciously successful. Gratitude. Wishing you lots of adventures in 2024, may the year bring you love, joy and peace.
