29 things to do when life gives you lemons

Before writing this post, I checked what the phrase “when life gives you lemons” means. It means when life throws curve balls at you, you should stay positive. I’m not sure what lemons have to do with curve balls or who decided that lemons represented bad things. In India we use lemons to ward off bad omen. But as mother loves to repeat, “English is a funny language.”

In any case, if life throws lemons at you, here is some wisdom for the ages:

  1. Cry – because a good cry can really clear the system and make you feel better.
  2. Go to sleep – maybe you’ll wake up and it’ll all be a dream, or it’ll be true. In either case, you would have gotten a good nap out of it so yay you.
  3. Dance – there is a huge possibility this lemon is a sign that good things are on the way. So go, celebrate. Woohoo!
  4. Journal – talking about your feelings to your trusty journal is always a good idea. And if this leads to either of the above options that’s just a bonus.
  5. Curse – I have always believed in the power of cursing out loud. It is a great way of releasing the tension and makes me feel like I did something naughty and forbidden.
  6. Throw the lemon back – that will show the universe not to mess with you.
  7. Make tea – I mean, this one is obvious. It’ll give lemon FOMO and you could then befriend it and maybe plan an insurgency.
  8. Make lemonade – sit outside with your cool glass, as you watch everyone else participate in the rat race.
  9. Gloat – since the universe is paying you attention and hasn’t forgotten you. That’s a win in my book.
  10. Read a book – it’s always reading time obviously BUT when the going gets tough, you should definitely pick up a book.
  11. Ignore it – you don’t need that kind of negativity in your life, right?
  12. Write a LinkedIn post – and make it a 500-word, 10 step strategic approach to how you saved the day, won the problem and also saved old ladies.
  13. Sit with it – understanding why something has gone wrong is the first step to freedom.
  14. Throw it away – you have enough lemons to juggle, you don’t need one more.
  15. Add it to your moong ki daal – have you ever had moong ki daal with lemon? It tastes divine.
  16. Draw it and write a haiku on it – maybe it’ll help you feel better.
  17. Give it to your mother – mothers know best. She’ll know exactly what you did wrong and will give you a seven-step process on how to get your life back on track. Heh.
  18. Buy more – and make nimbu ka achar. Then find someone who can make you mathri and enjoy a snack. You have earned it.
  19. Do a SWOT analysis – to understand exactly where you went wrong and then, squeeze some lemon on it.
  20. Add mirch to it and hang it in front of your car – if nothing else, your bad luck will help you prevent bad luck for your car.
  21. Call the show Aahat, maybe they have misplaced their lemons – gosh do you remember the lemon episode where a demon is trapped in the lemon and stepping on it unleashes it?
  22. Gather ingredients for a bhel and munch on it – as you contemplate all of your life’s choices that have brought you here.
  23. Add it to your Pepsi or Coke – I may not like it but people like how Pepsi/Coke tastes with a slice of lemon swimming in it.
  24. Talk to it – and tell it all your life’s problems. It’ll feel so sorry for you it’ll decide to go trouble someone else.
  25. Write an opinion piece – about how lemons must feel to be associated with bad luck.
  26. Make a reel or podcast – sharing life lessons that a lemon teaches you.
  27. Cancel it – how dare it say you have bad luck? Lemons are cancelled.
  28. Plant it – now you don’t just have some bad luck, you have a tree worth of bad luck.
  29. Share this blog post – if you don’t want 10,000 years of bad luck on you.

So, what will you be doing with lemons today?
