Love exists in every thread of the universe.
It exists when you look at a blooming flower.
It exists when you see yourself in the mirror.
It exists when your mother scolds you for spending too much time in front of the mirror.
And it exists when your father peeks into your room as you apply kajal in your eyes, sending his blessing to you from afar.
Love can slow you down.
It can distract you from your life’s purpose.
It can become unbearable because you realize you have outgrown people you had sworn to love forever.
It can become like a thorn in your side – removing which could mean certain death.
It can make the wider world seem dim when it’s not next to you.
I have been inspired by love. Love for my home and four walls.
I have been betrayed by love. When I became the last in line to receive my own love.
I have been uplifted by love. The love that exists between people and the quiet strength it provides.
I have been left confused by love. Why must we have power over those we love most? Why then must we misuse this power?
I have been in awe of my capacity to love. The way my heart can expand to contain the entire universe worth of feelings.
It is absence that teaches you about love.
But it is also presence that makes you feel the warmth of love.
You know what I love most about this feeling?
How universal it is when the sight of a snow-capped mountain makes us pause. Or how we run away to the sea when we are in need of reassurance. Or the night sky that tells us we’re home.
How individualistic it is when the sight of red bangles reminds me of mother. The sight of a red gamcha reminds me of father. A blue ribbon reminds me of daughter. A white shirt reminds me of son.
There is so much love in your heart.
It makes you laugh. It makes you cry.
It makes you joyful. It makes you angry.
It makes everything intense.
So, any time you are numb, or don’t know which way to turn
Turn to love. Turn to the fire of love.
Turn to the angst you carry in your heart.
That tells you: you can do anything. You deserve everything.
