I have not been kind to you

I have not been kind to you
Yet you have supported all my whims

I have not been respectful of you
Yet you have always done your best by me

I have not taken care of you as you deserve
Yet you have striven to keep me safe

I have cursed and railed at you
I have hurt and angered you
I have distanced myself from you
Stating, quite definitively
That you are not mine
You don’t belong to me
My identity is not a function of you.

And yet…oh my sweet…
You have never abandoned me.
Only told me, eloquently,
How I could improve
Tips to reconnect
Signalling when something was not quite right
Loving, despite the hurt
Showing up, demanding I pay attention.

I am paying attention now
I hope I am not late
And we can still work something out.
I am going to be kinder,
I am going to listen more
All I ask is you give me this chance
To love you as you deserve.
