Here are 4 things about today’s world that puzzle me [yup I’m just directly going to start]:
- Who runs the world?
Whenever I watched Game of Thrones, the one thing that always stood out to me was how little the people who were fighting to rule Westeros and sit on the iron throne cared about the actual people. I would wonder why they wanted to rule when they didn’t care about anything beyond the need to possess that throne.
That’s fiction. Coming to the real world, recently, I read something that changed my perspective on the business of running worlds: in our professional lives, even freshers need to have something on their CV if they want to be hired. People above 65 retire because it is understood that their skill-set may not be conducive to what the new generation of employees need.
And yet, and yet, the world is run by people who have exactly 0 idea or care or qualification for what the people need. How is it that the job that has the most responsibility and authority has such little balances and checks to ensure right job, right fit, right qualification is followed?
- Obsession with telling people how to live or who to love
How do people find the time, energy and the will to put in the effort to tell someone how they should live their life, or how they’re not living up to their full potential or how they’re failing at life because they haven’t reached certain milestones or achieved some nebulous position that could declare them as successful? I don’t know why people, who aren’t middle-class privileged men, need to fight for the basics of having their identity or partner acknowledged by the world at large.
- The utilitarianism of violence
Violence against the other is justified. Violence against us begets more violence. I had thought we only inherited our genes and physical characteristics from our “elders.” But no, we also inherit their violence, hatred and anger.
I wonder when it became okay for the “elders” to not bat an eye over violence but become incensed at my pacifism, my naivety. How did violence become an answer to all of life’s problems?
You know when I was looking for a suitable title for this post, I wanted to go with ‘utility’ because in my mind, utility means that which is used most often. As I was confirming my definition on Google, I came across the word ‘utilitarianism.’
Utilitarianism is a theory of morality that advocates actions that lead to happiness and opposes action that leads to harm.
So, this is what we have achieved. We have made violence attractive and a necessary means to achieve our well-being. Do the “elders” not see why this equation is inherently wrong? That there is nothing moralistic or good about violence?
- Apologizing for being an introvert
Why have we made a word that describes some of our personality traits into our whole personality? Why do young people apologize for being introverted while being assimilated into company culture? When did it became okay for us to be ashamed of being quiet, thinking before speaking, liking our own space?
These are 4 things that puzzle me. Tell me, what are some things that puzzle you about today’s world?
