“I think I know what I want you to watch.”
Gaurav looked up from the very important novel he was reading, hiding the sigh that almost escaped him. He did not want a repeat of the lecture he had gotten only yesterday.
Now usually, he was very receptive to his wife’s ideas. He loved how hairbrained they were and almost always tickled his spontaneity and wild streak just right. Last month, she had decided she wanted to learn kite flying and they had had a wonderful weekend in Kutch, learning how to fly kites.
But for the past two days, this side of her was getting on his nerves. One of her married friends had given her the idea that he and she should read/watch each other’s favourite books/movies. It’ll be fun, the friend said. It’ll be a great way to bond and get inside his head, the friend said.
Only, every time his wife chose a movie she wanted him to watch, she would feel upset about the other favourite movies she had and oh no but G, what if they get sad that they aren’t my favs. I can’t do that. No, I need to make sure…
That was when he had sighed and gotten a lecture on not taking this seriously. He had already chosen the book he wanted her to read. The Princess Bride because it had romance, action and a kickass heroine – all elements he knew she would enjoy. Was it his most favourite book? No. He had several and he had chosen the one from those several which would suit her tastes.
He had tried to explain this logic to his wife but…let’s just say, she had been displeased and that had led to one of their most bitter fights.
“What?”
“I want you to watch Gangs of Wasseypur.”
Gaurav nodded his head, then blinked and looked at his wife like she had changed into someone he didn’t recognize. “That can’t be your favourite movie.”
“Are you trying to suggest…”
He raised his hands in surrender. “You know I’m not implying anything. You hate Anurag Kashyap’s brand of movies and I have already seen it. You know I have seen it because we were dating at that time and I had to go with my office people since you refused to go with me. Even the bribe of caramel popcorn didn’t change your mind.”
Rinkie made a face and then sighed before plonking on the sofa next to him. “I’m going to murder Lakshmi. It was her stupid idea because of which we have now fought twice.”
“Can I come with you?” he said, sitting up on the sofa and opening his arms so she would take it as an invitation to cuddle.
“Why are you stressing over this so much?”
“Because!”
He groaned. Then said, “I have a brilliant idea. You’re going to love me for it. How about we watch all the movies on your fav list? That way you won’t have to choose, none will feel bad and we can put this stupid idea behind us AND I can get some peace to read this novel I have been trying to finish for ages.”
She let out a happy squeal and hugged him. He sighed but there was no lecture this time because it was a happy sigh, not an exasperated sigh.
“Can we still murder Lakshmi though?”
“Oh yes definitely.”
